10 Craziest Onstage Incidents In Rock

8. Bill Berry's Blackout

Watching your typical R.E.M. concert is not exactly the most demanding thing in the world from a performance perspective. While Michael Stipe and co. certainly give their all to every single performance they have given, there aren't as many bells and whistles that go into the show as you might expect. However, one little trick of the light proved to be near-fatal for Bill Berry.

During the tour behind the album Monster, Berry was playing in Switzerland when one of the lighting features triggered something in his brain a few songs into the show. After everything calmed down, Berry was found to be suffering from a brain aneurysm, which caused him to be rushed to the hospital in just a few minutes. The rest of the band have gone on to say that had they not been on top of things, it was very likely that Bill would have died right there onstage.

Though Bill later entered the fold after a brief recovery time, this was just the tip of the iceberg, as he left shortly after citing that he had been growing apart from the rest of the band. Then again, if you've put yourself through the physical ringer like that night after night, you've more than earned a little bit of a break from the madness of rock and roll.
