10 Dark Horse Albums By Legendary Bands

9. Zooropa - U2

At the beginning of the '90s, U2 had seemed to get away with the impossible. After being heralded as the future of rock and roll at the turn of the century, the alternative revolution saw them drowning themselves in irony on Achtung Baby, giving them the second wind that most acts only dream of. Since Achtung Baby's greatest strengths were its weird asides, these Irish lads spent the next few years getting...well...weird.

When it comes to Zooropa, most people tend to forget that this album even exists. Given the metric juggernaut that came on the previous record, this was called one of the more ill-advised moments in U2's career, complete with a song that consisted primarily of the Edge reading lyrics like he was reciting words from a textbook. On the other hand, this might be one of the more adventurous albums of the group's career, with Bono willing to either take a back seat or push his vocals into sounds and styles that weren't just the arena ready sound.

This is also where the electronics start to creep in a little bit, with Larry Mullen Jr. still toeing the line between the tasteful organic kit and the synthetic flourishes. Though this would be a warning sign of what was to come on Pop, this is still a fairly artistic statement from a group who could have easily just spat out the same three tunes over and over again. Still a big risk, just not as glowing a success.
