10 Darkest Rock Albums Of The 90s

6. The Holy Bible - Manic Street Preachers

With the explosion of the Britpop movement, it looked like things were about to start turning a corner. Once the grunge wave started to fade from memory, seeing musicians like the Gallagher Brothers bringing proper rock and roll to the forefront gave the rock scene something to get excited about again. In between songs about living forever and the wonders of Parklife though, there was one Brit that was going through murder.

As if the serious album title didn't clue you in enough, the Manic Street Preachers' 3rd album is one of the emotionally unstable records of the late '90s. Working alongside bands like Oasis at the time, this is more or less a peek into the mind of Richey Edwards, which is a pretty dangerous place to be once you listen to it. Whether it's listening to the jaded takes on love in Revol or the slow toll of anorexia in 4st 7lb, the characters in these songs seem like they're on the verge of collapse.

And so it proved to be for Richey as well. Only a few months after the album's release, Edwards disappeared from the public eye and became a missing person before eventually being presumed dead after years of searching. Though most artists try to suffer for their art, you have to be careful not to dance to close to the fire either.
