10 Darkest Rock Music Albums Of The 80s

3. Closer - Joy Division

So far, all of these albums have definitely dealt with their dark subject manner from a different angle. Though it's easy to just blast you in the face with some heavy riffs, it's a lot more fun when the artist sneaks in some dark stuff into a song right under your nose. When it comes to Joy Division, Closer is the kind of album that gets darker when you know what's going on behind the scenes.

At the start of the decade, it looked like Joy Division were going to be the next colossal band in rock, turning post punk into a household name and cranking the morose dials all the way up to 11. In the case of Ian Curtis though, that kind of depressing mood wasn't something that he could turn off, leading to him eventually spiraling into a depression and being found dead by suicide in his home shortly before this album was released.

Taking that into account, all of the sounds of this album feel a lot more real than some would want to hear, with Curtis sounding more and more dejected with every verse. There's always some form of performance whenever a singer jumps up on stage, but this is where the line between the two sides starts to blur. This feels more like the diary of Curtis as he goes into the darkest moments of his life, almost as if he knew that he didn't have that much time left.
