10 Elvis Presley Songs Which Will Change How You Think About The King

8. I Got A Feeling In My Body

This is one to challenge the received wisdom that, by the '70s, Elvis was a spent force. This recording dates from 1973, another turbulent time for the star, who was in the mist of a divorce from Priscilla, and reluctant to travel far from Memphis and his young daughter, Lisa Marie. It was also a time of opportunity – Presley's back catalogue had just been sold to RCA for a huge sum, and he had formed a new music publishing company with his manager, Tom Parker.

Stax Records, at this point, was entering its second golden age, thanks in part to the astonishing success of Isaac Hayes' Shaft soundtrack. Presley was up on all of these sounds and loved what Stax was doing. The studio provided the perfect venue, just minutes from Graceland and completely secure. Clearly inspired, over two short periods in July and December that year, Elvis recorded some of the greatest music he would ever make.

I Got A Feeling In My Body is one of the best cuts from these sessions, a hard-driving, high-energy funk-rocker which sweats and sways with irrepressible power. If you've never before heard any of the tracks from these sessions, you may well be in for a revelation. I Got A Feeling In My Body dispels another prominent Presley misconception – that he had left his kind of music behind in the '50s.
