10 Elvis Presley Songs Which Will Change How You Think About The King

3. Spinout

Presley appeared in an astonishing 31 films in little over a decade, many of them forgettable. His movie-soundtrack years, which formed the bulk of the '60s, are regarded as the singer's weakest, musically. Blame for this can't be aimed solely at Elvis, who was frequently frustrated by the poor, throwaway songs he was contractually forced to record. Presley's manager, Tom Parker, had tied the singer into a lucrative, but demanding agreement.

Yet not everything that Presley cut during these years is sub-standard. In fact, there are many highlights, Spinout being one of them. Taken from the 1966 film of the same name, this single proved a slow-burner, peaking at #40 on the Billboard Chart, but going on to become a steady-seller, and a long-time fan-favourite. It's a fun, funky rocker and Presley's vocal performance wrests the utmost out of the song.

The film, in which Elvis played a singer and race-car driver, pursued by three marriage-seeking women, garnered mixed reviews. Entertaining fluff, is probably the best which could be said of it. It's certainly not the worst film that Presley made, although it did find a home in the book, The Fifty Worst Films Of All Time. Whether it deserves that dishonour or not, Spinout the song proves that not everything Elvis recorded during this period was poor.
