10 Elvis Presley Songs Which Will Change How You Think About The King
2. Reconsider Baby
Two quotes from John Lennon serve as interesting book-ends to this song. The first, "Without Elvis, there would be no Beatles." The second, "Elvis died the day he went into the army."
The reasons behind the first are easy to understand – Presley instigated a rock 'n roll revolution during Lennon's formative years, especially with his incendiary (and controversial) TV appearances.
The second statement is harder to interpret. Presley was drafted at the height of his fame, in 1957, and returned to recording in 1960. Did Lennon really believe that Presley sold out, musically, from that moment on? Again, received wisdom will tell you that, after the '50s, Presley changed track musically, left behind rock 'n roll and turned exclusively to softer material.
The reality, as hopefully illustrated by this list, is quite different. Presley's taste was too eclectic to be limited. Then, too, all of the great stars adapt and evolve. Reconsider Baby is taken from the appropriately-titled album, Elvis Is Back – his first since being discharged. The album is rightfully celebrated as one of his best, containing hits such as Fever, Make Me Know It, and Reconsider Baby – a lazy, shuffling blues, first written and recorded by the great Lowell Fulson.
