10 Famous Rock Songs That Were Almost Called Something Else

7. Arctic Monkeys' When The Sun Goes Down - Almost Called “Scummy”

Perennial heartthrobs and all-round cheeky chappies, Arctic Monkeys emerged as ones to watch in 2006 with their first album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not.

With an album title like that, you just know the songs are going to be indie as heck.

The record saw the release of two singles, both of which went to number one in their native UK. First up was I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor, which was followed by the subject of this entry, When the Sun Goes Down.

Written about prostitution in the band's home town of Sheffield, the track was initially called Scummy, but this isn't a reference to what you might expect.

As the lyrics of the song explain, the scummy individual in question is actually the one hiring the sex workers:

And what a scummy man/Just give him half a chance/I bet he'll rob you if he can

The name change ultimately took the song's focus away from this shady character and made it more broadly about nighttime culture in the city. A good thing it did too, as that chorus is damn catchy.
