Just as Green Day were entering the studio to create their pop punk masterwork Dookie, Billie Joe Armstrong was dealt a heavy blow when his girlfriend left him. The pop punk transplant had set Billie's world on fire, leaving him feeling a bit jilted once the band finally hit it big.
Though time has dulled the sting of heartache, this same girl has permeated Green Day's material for years now. The first instance of her appearing in lyrics was on "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)," where Billie vents his frustration about being left hung out to dry. While the song did incredibly well, Billie had bigger plans for his muse, eventually adopting her punk rock persona into a character on the band's rock opera American Idiot.
Knowing the amount of separation that had gone on over the years, Armstrong cheekily decided to name the character Whatsername to make her even more ambiguous.
