10 Fantastic Rock Albums That Never Got Made
4. Songs From the Black Hole - Weezer
Weezer's 2nd album Pinkerton will probably go down in history as one of the most misunderstood albums of its time. After getting lots of unwanted attention off the strength of their blue-colored debut, this is the raw and abrasive reflection of Rivers Cuomo's psyche after being forced into an extroverted world. If things had panned out though, we could have found the nerd rock calling in space instead.
During the making of Pinkerton, the initial vision that Cuomo had in mind was a concept album revolving around an astronaut going on a journey to find new lands, tentatively titled Songs from the Black Hole. While everyone seemed a bit reluctant to get on board at first, things started to actually turn around when disaster struck. In the interim period enrolling at Harvard University, Cuomo started to get more and more desensitized, all while trying to come off of painkillers from the surgery that he had on his legs during the tour.
After months and months of no real progress, Weezer eventually relented and just released the most emotionally resonant tracks they knew how, which became their final statement before going on hiatus shortly after the tour. While songs like Tired of Sex and Getchoo were originally envisioned for the space opera, this is the album that will almost solely exist in the minds of fans.
