10 Flawless Rock Songs That Were Never Released On An Album

7. When Love And Hate Collide - Def Leppard

If Def Leppard were already on shaky ground after Hysteria, they didn't have a prayer in the '90s. Still reeling after the death of Steve Clark, most of Adrenalize was a solid record that was bound to be swallowed whole just a few months later when the Pearl Jams of the world started to take over the charts. Before they became a fixture of the nostalgic circuit, Leppard actually had one last bulletproof ballad in their arsenal for When Love and Hate Collide.

Released as part of a greatest hits collection, this song is almost like a flashback to the kind of Def Leppard that conquered the charts with songs like Love Bites. Then again, it's hard to look at this song and also not think of it as a retread, down to the fact that it has almost the same chord progression of their last ballad Have You Needed Someone So Bad. In this case though, the subtle changes might actually be an improvement on their original stab at it.

For something that's supposed to be intimate, it makes a lot more sense to bring out the acoustics this time around, harkening back to songs like Two Steps Behind. This is a rock relationship, and hearing the delicate sounds of the acoustics on here is enough to tug on your heartstrings a little bit more. Compared to most of their brethren in the '80s, Def Leppard may have been one of the few hair bands that actually understood the meaning of the word subtlety.
