10 Flawless Rock Songs That Were Never Released On An Album
4. Whatever - Oasis
In a post Definitely Maybe world, there was nothing that was going to stop Oasis' momentum. Noel Gallagher had locked into his groove of writing one hit after the next, and his brother Liam was just the right singer to deliver them to the masses. Just before they stepped into the realm of rock legends on What's the Story Morning Glory, they gave us a teaser of what was to come on Whatever.
Despite the controversy surrounding where Noel got his inspiration from for this song, this is one of the most tuneful tracs that the Gallaghers would write in the '90s, with an unstoppable chorus about being yourself even if the world is set against you. Compared to the psychedelic sounds of distortion going on on the first record, the whole track feels a lot more refined, even with the string section harkening back to the their idols the Beatles during the intro.
And while there are a lot of songs that hit a personal place for Oasis fans, this is probably one of the few that ring true to the Gallaghers the most. Just like the title would imply, Noel started off in the industry just being himself without a care in the world as to what people thought of him, and he then managed to turn himself into one of the biggest rock stars in the world. If anything, a song like this should be a lesson for every Oasis fan. Success isn't defined by how you look, and whatever you say is alright.
