10 Forgotten 2000s Bands Worth Rediscovering
2. Audioslave
If you missed out on Audioslave, shame on you. But in the interest of being fair, you might have avoided them at the behest of the critics who panned their debut. In which case, there's a lesson to be learned: critics often don't know sh*t.
Supergroups always run the risk of coming up against harsh judgment. After all, they have a lot to live up to. When you front Rage Against the Machine with the frontman from Soundgarden, people are going to expect big things. Rage arguably released the greatest rap rock record of all time, with their eponymous debut. And Soundgarden are considered grunge royalty. Tough praise to beat.
The idea of sticking Chris Cornell in front of Rage was the the brainchild of producer Rick Rubin. Although the pretentious music press delighted in tearing the union apart, their debut album was nothing short of brilliant.
The guys from Rage were tight as anything: the drums were relentless, the bass was driving, and Tom Morello's riff work was as tantalising as ever. It's not a bad starting place, but when you stick a vocalist as talented as Cornell into the mix, not much can go wrong.
