10 Forgotten 60s Rock Bands Worth Rediscovering
9. The Seeds
Another stand-out psychedelic rock group from LA, The Seeds got together in 1965, and survived until 1968 before changing their name and personnel, a shift which marked the end of their most fruitful years. Lead singer and founding member, Sky Saxon, would go on to release music under a myriad of different monikers, but would never replicate the success he found with this group.
In the original Seeds line-up, Saxon was joined by Jan Savage (guitar), Jeremy Leving (rhythm guitar), Daryl Hooper (keyboards), and Rick Andridge (drums). Like Ray Manzarek with The Doors, Hooper played bass parts on keys. The Seeds released three albums under that name (with various minor additions and subtractions to the band) before their dissolution in 1967.
In 2003, original members Saxon and Savage reformed the group, but it is their mid-60s output which concerns us here. A good measure of the skill and lasting influence of The Seeds lies in the long list of artists who have covered their work. That list includes: Alex Chilton, The Ramones, Pere Ubu, The Bangles and Garbage.
