10 Forgotten Rock Albums That Need To Be Heard
1. Bobby Conn By Bobby Conn
One of music's neglected, eclectic and brilliant talents, Bobby Conn, born in New York in 1967, has released albums in every decade since the 90's. If you've heard his name, it's likely because you've also heard his biggest hit, Never Get Ahead, which features on this album, his self-titled debut from 1997.
Never Get Ahead is a masterpiece of unforgettable, eccentric pop-rock. With it's counter-culture message, rock swagger and high, keening strings, Never Get Ahead could serve as an anthem for every generation. It's a radio-friendly (certain lyrics aside) upbeat number which both drives and entertains.
Conn, however, has much more to offer. That the opening song on this album is the seven-minute-long Overture should tell you much about Conn's musical depth and ambition. Wade past the swirling tape effects and you'll find yourself neck-deep in spiky, swampy funk-rock. In the album's outer reaches, an ocean of wild, heavy sounds awaits.
Bobby Conn will take you places no other artist knows. Those who appreciate Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart are bound to adore him.
