10 Forgotten Rock Albums That Need To Be Heard
2. We Care By Whale
The epitome of the forgotten classic. We Care (1995) is the first of only two albums released by Swedish alt rock group, Whale. The group comprised Gordon Cyrus and Henrik Schyffert, together with Schyffert's then-girlfriend, Cia Berg on vocals. Despite enjoying European success, especially with lead single, Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe, the group disbanded before the decade was out.
Listening to the album, it's no surprise to learn that Schyffert has gone on to enjoy an extensive career in the comedy world. We Care is full of surreal touches and eccentric sounds. It is also full of some truly wonderful songs. Opener, Kickin' – a warm slice of sing-along rock, doesn't really prepare you for what follows. From then on, things get wilder, stranger, and utterly compelling.
There's a hypnotic brilliance to We Care, which revels in its trashy, flashy aesthetic. How can you not celebrate such outlandish lines as: “I hope you get pregnant from a one-night stand by a Finnish man with a fake tan.”
Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe itself remains an outrageously
enjoyable slice of hip-hop-rock. Taken as a whole, the album stands as a brash, punky masterpiece.
