10 Forgotten Rock Albums That Need To Be Heard
3. Hindu Love Gods By Hindu Love Gods
Possibly the best-known 'forgotten' album on this list (if you'll forgive the oxymoron) thanks to the star-power of its personnel, Hindu Love Gods' 1990 self-titled debut was also their last. Inarguably, it's a great line-up, with three members of R.E.M.; Bill Perry (drums), Peter Buck (guitar), and Mike Mills (bass) joined by no less than Warren Zevon.
The material is fascinating, as the band tackle Prince's Raspberry Beret, Willie Dixon's Wang Dang Doodle, original songster Woody Guthrie's Vigilante Man and bluesman's bluesman Robert Johnson's Travelin' Riverside Blues (which many will be familiar with through the equally-excellent Led Zeppelin version).
Thanks to the R.E.M. trio's long history of playing together, the band sound tight and masterful. The addition of Warren Zevon brings a noticeably rockier feel than you might expect, with a loose, shambling edge which perfectly suits the chosen songs.
Whichever way you cut it, Hindu Love Gods is a stunning collection of blues-rock, as visceral and energetic as your could wish for.
