10 Funniest Joke Songs In Rock Music
6. Tommy's Holiday Camp - The Who
There's always been the ongoing joke that the drummer in every rock band gets labelled as the dumb one. I mean, unless you're an intellectual this side of Neil Peart, people are usually going to see you as just the crazy guy who gets paid to beat the snot out of a drumset. In the Who's case though, Keith Moon did have a few more aces up his sleeve in the comedic department.
Towards the end of the mammoth rock opera Tommy, Tommy's Holiday Camp was Moon's attempt to write some material that fit in with the rest of the album, taking on the role of Uncle Ernie trying to lure these new followers of Tommy into his grasp. With only a few little guitar extensions, most of this song feels like it's better suited for a circus scene, as Moon takes on the mantle of ringleader.
For all of the joke-y vibes this song gives off though, there's also a subtle hint of darkness in between the circus atmosphere. Seeing how Ernie in the story was supposed to be the man who abused Tommy as a young boy, this might be just a setup for a lifetime of more torture for young kids by the end. Even though this works well when out of context, the details of the track might make you feel a little bad for laughing.
