10 Funniest Joke Songs In Rock Music
3. 665 - Soundgarden
Every type of heavy music has always had some sort of weird connection back to Satan. Though there have been no known Satanic rituals to take place on the Black Sabbath stage, there are more than a few disgruntled parents who will swear off this "devil's music" until the day they die. If you talk that much trash to the metal community though, it's only a matter of time before they strike back.
On their first proper studio album, Soundgarden's 665 is one of the heavier tracks on the record, nearly going full on punk in some of the arrangements. In the same vein as their metal brethren before them, this song features some backwards music in the breakdown, which many have speculated to be the worship of some unholy forces. Until you realize that...it's not...in fact, it's almost wholesome.
When hearing the backwards recording played forwards, Chris Cornell is actually singing about the virtues of Santa rather than Satan, which is where the 665 number comes from. As Cornell later explained, the meaning behind the title was their thinking that because 666 is known as the devil's number, than 665 must be a pretty powerful number too. For as far as metal had come at this point in time, it's nice to hear that Soundgarden still had some lighthearted fun in their system when the time called for it.
