10 Glorious "Dad Rock" Albums

1. Aja - Steely Dan

It's almost impossible to differentiate dad rock from what has been called yacht rock for the past 20 years. When you strip away all of the rock and roll and blues from the equation, this is the kind of music that you can hear blaring out of the shuffleboard deck on a really expensive yacht that caters to people with retirement plans. While most of these records manage to lull you to sleep, Aja by Steely Dan can easily go toe to toe with some of the best rock and roll there is.

Granted, a handful of people probably only know Steely Dan from the random references that John Mulaney makes during his standup specials. Outside of the dad rock stereotype though, this is by far one of the greatest sounding rock records of the '70s, with the productions of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker setting the benchmark for all great pop albums that were to follow.

Whereas the other yacht rock of the day may have been a little too cheesy, the chops on these songs are undeniable, blending mixes of jazz, fusion, and pretty much everything else besides rock and roll to make some of the most sophisticated rock ever produced on songs like Peg and the title track. These aren't the dads that play on the weekend just for the hell of it. These are bonafied studio wizards that are looking to put rock on the same level as the American standards of old.
