10 Great Albums That Came Out After The Band Split Up

7. Misfits - Static Age

While other bands on this list suffered from consequences beyond their control such as sudden deaths or record label complications, Misfits can honestly blame nobody other than themselves for the immense delay on ‘Static Age’ coming out.

Originally recorded in 1978 with the intention of being the horror punk group’s debut album, ‘Static Age’ was not heard in full by the public until 1996, some thirteen years after the band had split up. Forming in 1977, Misfits released the first single from this album, ‘Cough/Cool’ soon after officially starting out. When the single was released, bassist Jerry Only had been playing the instrument for just a few months, and the band initially rehearsed without a lead guitar because none of the members had one.

A key hindrance for ‘Static Age’ was the fact that Misfits couldn’t find a label interested in releasing the full album. Starting out as a lowly DIY band, most major labels didn’t give them the time of the day, which meant the self-recorded tracks had to be released as individual singles by the band directly instead. Worse still, plans to formally release the album once they struck a record deal fell through due to Misfits suddenly disbanding in 1983 following a disastrous US tour marred by fights, drunken cancellations, members sackings and being arrested for suspected grave robbing.

After an eventual court settlement, Misfits were able to regroup in 1995 without Glenn Danzig and their first course of action was to finally release ‘Static Age’ in 1996.
