10 Great Hip Hop Albums With Only One Bad Song
9. California - Childish Gambino
Looking back on this, is it even fair to classify what Donald Glover did on Awaken My Love fully rap? Along with getting one of the most soulful songs on the charts with Redbone just a few years ago, there's a lot about this record that has more in common with the soul and R&B of the '70s than anything like Travis Scott nowadays. If we're talking about a mood killer though, California is one of the more amateurish moments in Gambino's career.
Seeing how most of the record is a great look at what it's like to see this man grow into adulthood, hearing the warped Autotune on this record feels like a huge step backwards in retrospect. Compared to the soulful sounds of Glover's voice on something like Terrified, it doesn't even sound like he's caring anymore by the end of the song, singing the hook line as if he's intentionally trying to make it weirder.
Then again, maybe this was meant to be sort of a palette cleanser from the serious stuff, with Donald just throwing in a joke track for laughs before going back in for more. We're all glad that you still have your funny side Donald, but can you do that away from the rest of the album? I mean, if you had the potential of making This is America, there's no reason for this to exist.
