10 Great Rock & Metal Albums From 2018 You May Have Missed
6. Black Fast - Spectre Of Ruin
Spectre of Ruin picks up where Terms of Surrender ended: as if Black Fast never stopped shredding their instruments.
With their first two albums, Black Fast burst onto the scene proving they could write some awesome riffs that no metalhead could resist air-guitaring to. With Spectre of Ruin, it would seem they decided to lean more into fast chord strumming with less riff intensity than the previous two releases.
While that may seem like a step in the wrong direction, it still ends up working rather well. The album pummels you with the violent rhythms alongside vocalist Aaron Akin's shriveling voice, and even slows it down occasionally to let some expression run its course.
It would seem they were trying to mature their sound with Spectre of Ruin. To say that didn't work wouldn't be accurate, but to say it worked so heavily in their favor would be a lie. What Black Fast managed to do was batter the doors down on a new horizon to build a new foundation. Only time will tell if they're able to make even more from this new path.
