10 Great Rock Songs Written In Anger

4. Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith

By the time the 70's started rolling, Aerosmith were quickly gaining traction as one of the most exciting bands coming out of America. The band took the blues rock of British bands and were combining them with a funky backbeat that made for their commercial breakthrough on the album Toys in the Attic. While the album boasted their fantastic single "Sweet Emotion," there's was much more at play than just the sharp guitar riffs.

For a while, the band only had the backing track of the song with no lyrics because of the separation between Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. Tyler was getting increasingly upset that Perry would spend all of his downtime out of the studio with his girlfriend instead of working on tunes with him.

As an act of spite, Tyler wrote the entirety of "Sweet Emotion" directed squarely at Joe's girlfriend, bringing up her boring conversations and his insatiable need to be as far away from her as possible. Though it wasn't a pleasant birthing period, "Sweet Emotion" helped give Aerosmith even more success that they ever thought was possible. The song may talk about sweet emotion, but the actual emotions at play were far more vicious than you might think.
