10 Great Songs By HATED Hard Rock Bands
6. Crawling In The Dark - Hoobastank
As the musical landscape was spreading out in the mid 2000s, no one really had high hopes for Hoobastank. Aside from their horrible band name, their sound seem to be too derivative of other acts like Incubus to be taken seriously be the mainstream public. Even when the public did take notice, their rise to the top with "The Reason" gave the world the curse to karaoke bars everywhere.
When combing through their back catalog, you could actually see the more rootsy band that they were trying to be on "Crawling in the Dark." The guitar melody is actually pretty interesting, and the melody behind the chorus is enough to get any rocker onboard.
The lyrics aren't that great, with much of it being the disenfranchised "Why am I here?" tropes, but the groove is still worth more than anything else the band had done.
In terms of songwriting, this song is actually a decent slice of alt-rock for the time, to the point that it could even be mistaken as a late-era Incubus B-side. "The Reason" may still be an albatross that hangs over the rock community's neck, but just imagine what Hoobastank could have been if this was the song that broke them.
