10 Great Songs By HATED Hard Rock Bands
5. Control - Puddle Of Mudd
Grunge's mark on the rock scene at large can't be overstated. At a time when rock was looking too manufactured, these bands made every rock fan get off their ass and focus on the most important thing: the music. However, after grunge quickly faded from the view, the hard rock of post-grunge ended up spitting out acts that had no business seeing success.
Out of all these bands, Puddle of Mudd wasn't necessarily the worst, but the nasal whine of Wes Scantlin was too much for the average rock fan to stomach. With a record produced by Fred Durst, it wasn't a surprise that this band's debut Come Clean ended up the way it did, with halfhearted melodies and rudimentary guitar riffs.
For as subpar as this album is, "Control" actually has some legitimate punch that made you want to bang your head. The song's detuned riff sounds perfect playing off of Scantlin's angry vocal, as he sounds like he's about to explode at any moment.
Like most POD songs, it is too repetitive for its own good, but it doesn't matter when the riff is actually decent for a change. Even though radios preferred the sonic travesties of "She Hates Me," "Control" was an okay performance from a band destined to be...meh.
