4. Far Away - Nickelback
It's almost become an initiation ritual for a rock fan to hate Nickelback. Across their career, the band have received bashing from all stripes of rock fans for being the absolute worst that the genre has to offer. From the endlessly memed "Photograph" to the more uncomfortable moments of "Animals," the band certainly has made tracks that have warranted that kind of vitriol.
Out of all the songs to emerge from the band's catalog, it was actually the ballad that turned out to be the best of the bunch. Instead of the straightforward rock groove, "Far Away" is actually more subdued in its composition, with most of it being an acoustic guitar affair and the help of some classical instrumentation.
For a band that is known for pumping out the exact same song over and over again, some credit is due to the band's ability to step away from their typical angry sound, if only for a few minutes.
This song's more acoustic flavor could even get more potential rockers interested in the genre, so long as they realize that it gets much better than this. You don't have to raise your lighters up too high, but in terms of evoking genuine emotion, this one's a pretty safe bet.
