10 Greatest Album Intros In Rock History
1. Sgt. Peppers - The Beatles
After years of touring the world over and over again, it seemed that the Beatles had grown tired of each other. While the Fab Four were still on good terms as friends, the idea of the four moptop lads from Liverpool going on and on didn't really appeal to them anymore after making amazing albums like Rubber Soul and Revolver. Rather than tour into the ground, Sgt. Pepper's is where they hunkered down and delivered a studio masterpiece.
At the outset, Paul McCartney pitched the idea of the Fabs taking on the persona of an imaginary band, giving them total creative freedom to play whatever they wanted to play. Looking to kick everything off right, the title track opens the album to get the listeners used to the new group's sound, with a punishing distorted guitar that seems reminiscent of what Jimi Hendrix would be doing just a few months later.
Though the loose concept unfolds in the lyrics, this descent down the rabbit hole also was a great way to sum up the Summer of Love, as rock fans the world over were getting much more experimental and pushing the boundaries of what this music could do. The revolution was firmly underway now, and with the release of Sgt. Peppers, it was clear that the Fab Four were the ones leading the charge.
