10 Greatest Arctic Monkeys Songs

1. 505

505 is a slow burner but it's one of, if not the, most dramatic songs the band have ever recorded. Driven by Alex Turner's droning organ and closing Favourite Worse Nightmare, this song is also a crucial moment in Alex Turner's songwriting career as he dives into emotional territory he had yet to up to that point.

Nostalgic, romantic and tragic all in one, 505 is a rollercoaster of emotions. It has our narrator desperately in love and trying everything in his power to cling on to this last shred of a relationship. He says ' I'd probably still adore you with your hands around my neck'. Even at the point of physical violence he would not hold a grudge against her. He's either devoted to the extreme, thinks he deserves punishment or is simply turned on by violence.

After the instrumental break the song explodes into a display of pure heartbreak and emotion, unlike anything the band had recorded up to that point or have recorded since.

505 is powerful not because it is extremely poetic, or conceptual or witty. It is because it is the most raw and honest display of emotion the band have ever exhibited on a record.
