8. Elastic Heart - Sia

Sia had been building up a range of high profile songs at home and abroad by the beginning of the last decade, but it was this song that sent her into the stratosphere. Matched with a wonderful if slightly controversial music video, Elastic Heart was Sia at her most heartfelt and most creative.

The opening lyrics sound like they're borrowed from a Queen classic, but this has a hell of a lot more to offer than a simple Freddie knock off. The Aussie sings from the heart with her husky voice bringing out experiences of heartbreak and resilience, the beautifully mixed song exuding the contrast of emotions that is brought to the table.

The song manages to be achingly heartbreaking and powerful at the same time, and throughly deserves its place on this list.
