10 Greatest Australian Songs Of All Time

7. Beds Are Burning - Midnight Oil

Midnight Oil, or The Oils as they are affectionately known down under, were a major political voice throughout the 80's, tackling issues related to the environment, international conflict and indigenous issues. It was the latest topic that was the focus for their 1987 album Diesel and Dust, which contained smash hits such as The Dead Heart, Put Down That Weapon and this classic number.

Evoking the brutality of the outback, Garrett's vocals radiate over the listener, depicting the harsh realities of the living conditions of Australia's indigenous population while demanding immediate change. Hillman's bass is legendary, brooding beneath the track throughout, while Rob Hirst's drums with accompanying brass instruments brings the tune to life, before the iconic chorus lines kick in.

The song had a controversial impact on the 2000 Olympics, with Garrett and the band playing the number during the closing ceremony celebrations. The band members all wore t-shirts that simply stated Sorry, in reference to the Government at the time not making an official apology to Indigenous Australians for their poor treatment throughout history.
