10 Greatest Band Rivalries In Rock History

5. Nirvana vs. Pearl Jam

When Nirvana hit it big, it seemed that no one knew what was popular anymore. With all the 80's fads blown off the map, many people were looking to frontman Kurt Cobain to see what he thought was popular. Though he lambasted the hair metal bands that came before him, not even Cobain's contemporaries were safe from his verbal venom.

As Cobain began being asked about bands like Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, Cobain had a few choice words to say about Eddie Vedder's outfit. In an effort to hold onto his indie credibility, Cobain called Pearl Jam a mockery of the grunge aesthetic, with a sound that was too in line with classic rock to be considered truly alternative. Though PJ were a bit on edge at first, they were able to take it in stride and be mindful of their decisions going forward.

Though it may have gotten nasty, the feud became water under the bridge once everything blew up. When talking to MTV, Cobain said that he actually was very friendly with Eddie Vedder and even danced with him underneath the stage at the MTV Awards during Eric Clapton's performance of "Tears in Heaven." While Cobain would end his life a few years later, it was comforting to know that he had made amends with his hard rock competition.
