10 Greatest Blues Rock Guitarists
9. John Mayer
I can hear the groans already. It's no secret that John Mayer has taken a lot of flack in recent years for his pretentiousness and his overly poppy sound. His comments on celebrity culture sometimes generate more buzz than the actual music he's featured on.
However, a lot of people forget one important thing about John as a musician. That being: his virtuosic blues guitar playing. All across Mayer's discography, he has put together massive guitar showcases while still making his songs incredibly hooky. Look no further than his 2006 album Continuum, where Mayer takes his bluesy fretwork into a pop orientated atmosphere. The songs may be a bit too sugary for some, but Mayer's guitar work on these tracks are a sight (or sound?) to behold.
In addition to his solo career, Mayer's work on the live album Try! has some of the tastiest riffs he has come up with. Even between album cycles, Mayer's Instagram has become famous for his many blues improvisations. When blues seems to be suffering commercially, John Mayer is still bringing that six-string swagger into the pop sphere.
