10 Greatest Classic Rock Albums Of The 1970s
6. David Bowie - The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars
As Bowie’s third album from the 1970’s and fifth overall, this album had big boots to fill following on from 1970’s ‘The Man Who Sold the World’ and 1971’s ‘Hunky Dory’. Despite its pressure to perform, ‘Ziggy Stardust’ became a culturally significant record and made David Bowie a true legend if he wasn’t already.
David Bowie is regarded to be the face of alternative music by many and that reputation was instilled partly by this record. From the catchy rock vibes of ‘Suffragette City’ to the docile yet meaningful tones of ‘Starman’, this album is pure gold from start to finish.
Its legacy was acknowledged when it became one of the first albums to be re-issued as a CD in 1984.
This album is praised not only for its musical excellence, but also for highlighting issues surrounding fashion and sexuality in the 1970’s. Bowie was a flamboyant, colourful character in a rather straight-laced, plain dressed era of music and he became an undying hero to millions because of it.
