10 Greatest Classic Rock Bands Of All Time

4. Pink Floyd

While there will be many who will argue that Pink Floyd should sit much higher or even top this list, the were more of an acquired taste than many on this list. After the superb Syd Barrett lead debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, the band became somewhat self indulgent and produced consistently daring but ultimately good-not-great albums over the subsequent five years.

1973's Dark Side of the Moon proved to be the band's turning point, a greater focus on Rock aspects than the experimental nature of the previous albums. The songs produced between the 1973 album and 1979's The Wall proved to be some of the best rock ever produced, each album leaving its own distinct mark.

The ability to build a story musically with the lyrics becoming a secondary instrument was a real highlight of the band, leading us into a truly epic emotional experience other bands could only dream of. The likes of Comfortably Numb took us inside of the mind of a drug effected brain, Another Brick In The Wall asked us to rebel, while Wish You Were lamented lost friends. But even without the lyrics, the journey was still abundantly clear, the Roger Waters lead band bringing their concepts to life in epic scale.

According to many critics the band's brilliance was best appreciated during their live shows, their intricate set pieces and visual displays bringing Waters' extravagant ideas to life. The live performances may be gone, but the memories will live on forever.
