10 Greatest Comeback Albums In Rock Music History

3. Band on the Run - Paul McCartney and Wings

As the '70s reached its halfway point, most of the music press was getting ready to write off Paul McCartney for the last time. Ever since releasing some lofi experiments and having a few hits here and there with Maybe I'm Amazed and Another Day, it just felt like the Cute One was spent creatively and was nowhere near the level of acclaim as his former bandmates. Paul needed to really get back in business, and he couldn't have had a harder hurdle than Band on the Run.

Outside of the critics being harsh on him, Paul set out to get a change of scenery by recording in Nigeria, only to have half of the band quit in protest just as they were about to board the plane. Left with just Linda and bandmate Denny Laine, Macca managed to build a studio from scratch and craft some of the catchiest songs of his post Beatles years.

Upon release, it felt like Paul had finally gotten his muse again, with songs like the title track and Jet rocking a lot harder than anything that was coming off of albums like Wild Life from a few years before. After one listen to this, all of the flak thrown at McCartney was over. Now we had to really start paying attention again.
