10 Greatest David Bowie Songs
5. Starman
When you ask people to name a Bowie song, Starman is more than likely one of the first ones they will come up with. And for very good reason. It serves as the centrepiece for Ziggy Stardust and has Bowie at arguably his most conceptual, telling the elaborate story of an otherworldy being bringing hope and joy to this dying world via the radio.
Bowie's performance of Starman on Top of The Pops in 1972 was a career defining moment for him as well. It launched his career even further than his previous albums and successful singles did. The song was extremely radio friendly whilst being conceptually complex and artistically intelligent. It was the perfect mixture for universal acclaim and commercial success.
The song is so essential to his career that Bowie himself is still commonly referred to as Starman. It was the perfect transition into the post-Beatles era of the early 1970's. Just as anthemic as anything the Beatles had released, it spoke to a whole new generation of young people just as the fab four had done the decade prior.
