10 Greatest Diss Tracks In Rock History
5. Serve the Servants - Nirvana
Kurt Cobain always had a bit of a contentious relationship with his own star power. Though he seemed to run towards the spotlight like an Olympic sprinter at the best of times, he always had cruel things to say about it once he reached the level of success he got. As opposed to just laying low for a couple of years, In Utero arrived right after Nevermind and showed Cobain with his fangs out.
Opening with a barrage of noise, Serve the Servants almost seems designed to piss off the critics who loved the poppier tendencies of the band's previous effort. Instead of just letting the music speak for itself, Cobain lashes out at his critics throughout the verses of this tune. While most his lyrics can be considered a bit obtuse by nature, the opening line of "teenage angst has paid off well, now I'm bored and old" speaks to his own indifference about the god-like figure that had been created for him.
By the time you actually get to hear the title, it's almost like Cobain is taunting his audience, seeing the contradictory nature of being at the mercy of those fans who would do anything for him. These internal conflicts wouldn't be solved after Cobain's eventual suicide, but this song gives us a glimpse that the glamorous life isn't always what it's talked up to be.
