10 Greatest Emo Songs Ever Written

5. Weezer €“ El Scorcho

This spot could have been reserved for any song from Pinkerton, really. When it comes to emo, Weezer are often credited as being one of the defining influences of the genre, with Pinkerton being one of the first €œemo€ albums ever recorded. Of course, at the time there wasn't really such thing as emo, so it's only in retrospect that it's possible to appreciate the influence Weezer had on the genre, with Pinkerton featuring passionate vocals delivering emotional lyrics that deal with everything from teenage frustration to isolation. El Scorcho €“ released as the album's first single in 1996 €“ deals with the singer's romantic feelings for a young woman, the frustration he feels with the infatuation and the uncertainty as to whether or not the notion is shared. Musically, the song is unique, featuring a loose structure and wandering guitar. When it was first released, the song did not do particularly well commercially, but it has since come to be regarded as a classic Weezer track. Listening to the song, it's clear how it influenced emo as a genre. It also features the fantastic lyric €œI asked you to go to the Green Day concert, you said you never heard of them, how cool is that?€.
