4. Brand New Seventy Times 7
The opening lyrics to Brand New's Seventy Times 7 basically sum up what the emo movement of the early to mid 2000s was really all about to many people. Back in school they never taught us what we needed to know, like how to deal with despair or someone breaking your heart. Released in 2001 on the band's debut album Your Favourite Weapon, the song's lyrics are incredibly intimate, depicting a painful betrayal by a close friend and the rage and hurt the singer is left feeling. Throughout the song the singer wishes death upon the friend in multiple violent ways, including I hope you choke and die, search your cell for something with which to hang yourself and the particularly brutal have another drink and drive yourself home, I hope there's ice on all the roads, and you can think of me when you forget your seatbelt and again when your head goes through the wind shield. With lyrics that descriptive and a passionate, pained delivery that manages to be catchy at the same time, Seventy Times 7 really is one of the best emo tracks ever written. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnLJ1iYOZHM
