10 Greatest Ever Fleetwood Mac Songs

9. Gypsy

One of the most personal songs ever written by Stevie Nicks, "Gypsy" is a song that sees the American reminisce about her life pre-Mac. Before her days of fame and fortune as the face of one of the most iconic bands of all time, Nicks and then-partner Buckingham had lived a poor lifestyle as struggling musicians, with the former's job as a waitress and cleaning lady barely making ends meet.

According to Nicks, the main inspiration behind Gypsy was a particular king-sized mattress the pair had in their apartment that they had lined with vintage coverlets. Nicks claimed that Gypsy was written at a time when Mac had gotten "really famous, really fast" in the late '70s, and that the song was a way for her to step back and remember the calmness of her days before.

Gypsy was released as the second single for the Mirage album in the summer of 1982, and went onto become the undisputed high point of an often overlooked point in the band's history.

The album went silver in the UK with over 200,000 sales, reached no.12 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a total of three weeks, and would be given an injection of renewed interest in 2019 when Nicks recorded an acoustic version for the Netflix series "Gypsy".
