10 Greatest Final Rock Music Albums Of The 1990s

1. In Utero - Nirvana

Of all the musical deaths in the '90s, perhaps the one that hit the hardest was Kurt Cobain's suicide in 1994.

Aged just 27, the Nirvana frontman took his own life at the height of his fame, shattering the hearts of millions and bringing home a startling realisation that the pain exhibited in his music was actually real.

Though he would appear posthumously on the live album, MTV Unplugged, Cobain's final studio release with Nirvana was 1993's In Utero, the follow-up to the mega-hit Nevermind. Though it was never going to touch that album, In Utero still produced some classic Nirvana tunes, including Dumb, All Apologies, and Heart-Shaped Box.

Although it is an immaculate album, In Utero is also tinged with sadness. It's not the work of a band about to call it quits, it's the sound of a band on the up, solidifying themselves as legends in their own time, capable of great things in the future.

Sadly, that future would never come, but the way in which Nirvana and Cobain have lived on is a testament to their impact. They not only helped mould the '90s, but they changed everything.
