10 Greatest Guitar Duos In Hard Rock

9. Joe Perry/Brad Whitford - Aerosmith

As the British Invasion started to blossom out, it wasn't out of the question to have two guitar players in your band. Although you had two guys who would trade off solos or something, most of them tended to sound disassociated with each other, just acting as crutches for their partner. When you have a frontline like Aerosmith though, fans were given a taste of true rock masterminds.

Whereas a band like the Rolling Stones had done this kind of guitar setup before, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford each had their own attitude when it came to playing. Being one of the main riff writers for the group, Perry's style is much more indebted to the rock star attitude, along with his Keith Richards-like style whenever he plays. For as much glory as Perry gets though, Whitford might actually be the superior player, having a writing credit on songs like Nobody's Fault and the amazing solo on Last Child.

That's not to say that both of them don't have their own respective chops, like on the mid point of One Way Street where they both take separate solos one after another. While these guys don't really come close to displacing Eddie Van Halen or anything, every single note that they have played across Aerosmith's '70s period is exactly where it needs to be.
