10 Greatest Guitar Riffs Of The 90s

1. Sad But True - Metallica

There has always been a bit of controversy in the metal world concerning Metallica's self titled Black Album. Even though this was the moment that made the band the household name that everyone knows them as today, there's also many who consider this the moment that Metallica dropped their thrash credentials and went into the world of mainstream rock. If you've thought that they softened up though, allow us to raise you Sad But True.

Compared to the more introspective tracks like The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters, the second track on the record was here to remind you that the heaviness had never gone away...it was just in a new outfit. Whereas most of the previous Metallica songs were about how fast you could play, the mid tempo groove of this song is dirty as all hell, with Lars Ulrich stepping up his game as well, following the riff with a drum sound that felt like the gods of war were on percussion.

And you can actually thank Bob Rock for the heaviness, thinking that the original version of the song was a bit too happy and making the suggestion that they slow everything down. It hasn't wore out its welcome in the Metallica catalog either. With an unstoppable swagger to match, there's a reason why this is the only song that the band plays live with the preface "You want heavy, Metallica brings you heavy."
