10 Greatest Hard Rock Closing Tracks

4. Mosquito Song - Queens Of The Stone Age

In 2002, Queens of the Stone Age created a stoner rock masterpiece with the album Songs for the Deaf. With detuned guitars and infectious grooves, this record took the listener on a journey through the California desert. As the album goes along, you feel the sonic landscape spread out as you travel further into the desert, culminating in the disquieting terror of "Mosquito Song."

After the band takes your head off with their heavy riffs, this final track starts off as a simple melodic tune done on acoustic guitar and Josh Homme singing in a bit of a different voice. Instead of the sultry seductive voice you've gotten used to over the course of the album, Homme's delivery is abnormal and slightly deranged as he talks about mosquitos coming to suck your blood.

At this point, you start to realize that your trip through the desert has ended with Homme turning into an absolute maniac as he has you trapped in this sonic headspace. With horns and guitars building in the background, you find that there truly is no escape, leaving the listener with a bleak ending with little hope of survival. Just the sort of darkness that keeps QOTSA interesting.
