10 Greatest Hard Rock Closing Tracks
3. Would? - Alice In Chains
Alice in Chain's already had a sure-fire winner of an opening track for their album Dirt with the headbanger "Them Bones." While that song throws you down into the drug-fueled abyss, "Would?" gives you the final form of darkness.
After trudging your way through the muddy haze of "Angry Chair," this track is the lynch-pin for the drug addict's redemption. Instead of lamenting on his state of mind, the narrator reflects on his addiction and tries to get the listener to truly see his perspective as a man with a chemical imbalance. This gets even more personal when you realize the song was written for Mother Love Bone frontman Andy Wood, who lost his battle with heroin addiction a few years prior.
As the tune builds to a climax, the singer wonders if he has tread too far down this dark path and seeks some closure. The song reaches its end by singer Layne Staley asking if the listener would have the strength to forgive this man for the damage that he is done, leaving the album with an audible question mark. By staying ambiguous, Alice in Chains made an emotionally potent artistic statement to close out their disturbed masterpiece.
