10 Greatest Hard Rock Frontmen Of All Time

2. Freddie Mercury - Queen

I can pretty much guarantee that this will come as a surprise to no one. Like you would see any list of rock frontmen and not mention Freddie Mercury. Despite being pushed onto the more pop side of rock, the actual roots behind one of the greatest vocalists in rock history is actually in the darker sounds of the music spectrum.

Long before Queen became the pop darlings on songs like Under Pressure and Another One Bites the Dust, Mercury had carved himself into one of the greatest eccentrics the rock world had ever seen, being able to do bluesy rock, prog material, and even showtunes in equal measure. However, this is about how you entertain an audience, and Freddie basically held every crowd in the palm of his hand. Instead of the shy reserved kid he had originally been, Mercury came alive onstage, almost as if he was laying out some part of his soul that had been kept under wraps for too long.

Whether it was the way he would tear through the vocals on Bohemian Rhapsody or encourage the crowd to sing along during Tie Your Mother Down, Freddie was never afraid to assert his musical identity in whatever way he saw fit. And let's not forget the "Hey-oh" chants, which gave Mercury an opportunity to almost control the crowd to his every whim. Dave Grohl once said that to learn how to control an arena, you have to watch the Pope or Freddie Mercury, and once you see Queen in action, you really get why.
