10 Greatest Hard Rock Songs Of 2020
6. Distance - Mammoth WVH
Many of the hard rock community can agree that the death of Eddie Van Halen is something that we still haven't been able to get over. The man created some of the greatest licks known to man and has built up a repertoire that will become one of the most legendary pieces of work in rock history. Even though we probably won't get to hear another fully-fledged Van Halen record again, we did get a fitting tribute from his son.
By this point, most VH fans had previously known Wolfgang as the interim bassist in Van Halen for years as well as being the bassist for Tremonti. Though he certainly had chops of his own, Distance was the emotional gut punch that many of us weren't ready to take just yet. Across this song, we hear Wolfie just pouring his heart out in song, as he talks about not being ready to move on, yet determined to continue regardless.
Granted, it's not like he has the technical chops to match his old man, but he makes up for that in the raw emotion he put into this instrumental, as if he's writing the letter to his dad from beyond the grave. Even though a world without Van Halen is going to be a very different place, it's great to see that Wolfie is still able to find the way back through music.
