2. Modern Living - Enter Shikari
Enter Shikari has slowly turned into one of the more interesting acts to come out of the post hard-core scene. As opposed to just keeping with the tradition of heavy riffs, their transition into electronic directions resulted in some of the greatest albums of the last few years like the Spark and the Mindsweep. Though these kind of left turns are fun for a handful of tracks, Modern Living shows that they are just getting started.
Set in a dystopian environment, the whole track ends up feeling somewhat mechanical from one line to the next. For any other band, this kind of thing may have been considered lame, but the way Enter Shikari actually put a rhythm to it makes the entire track come alive. This also might be one of the hookiest choruses of the year, as Rou Reynolds talks about being an apocaholic and waiting for the rapture to fold in around him.
Considering the turbulent times that it has been for the last few months, the idea of songs reflecting that kind of paranoia is at least cathartic at the time of writing. The world isn't necessarily going to end after 2020, but if we happen to be there for it, this is gonna be one hell of a soundtrack.
