10 Greatest Hard Rock Songs (Without Vocals)

4. A Warm Place - Nine Inch Nails

When it comes to the darker sides of rock and roll, Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral is about as pitch black as they come. At a time when the industrial rock boom was first starting to reach its apex, this denouncement of the entire world on the part of Trent Reznor leaves little hope for the listener by the end. Though something like Closer and March of the Pigs might tear your head off, there is a little bit of a breather in the form of A Warm Place.

Coming right after the assault on your senses of Big Man With a Gun, this track is just Reznor playing around with a solo synthesizer. Rather than the comedown that we so desperately need right now, this gives the protagonist of this concept album a moment alone with his thoughts, as he tries to hold on to the little bits of sanity that he has left.

However, this doesn't last for too long, as the original themes of the album start to creep in towards the end, showing that our hero is only condemned to repeat his actions in the long run. Though a song like this sounds like trying to put a bandage over a gaping wound, at least Trent tried to offer us just the tiniest bit of happiness amid this hellscape.
